Bangor City History & Honours |
Bangor City
was formed in 1876 and were founder members of the NWCFL in 1893.
In 1896 City were champions of the new league, in 1919 Bangor moved to
the North Wales Alliance and moved to Farrar Road in 1920. In the 1930s City competed in the Lancashire Combination winning the League Cup in 1949. The following year 1950 they became founder members of the Cheshire League, finishing runners up in 1954 and 1959. City won the 75th Welsh Cup Final in 1962, defeating Wrexham 3-1. This led to European Cup Winners Cup qualification and a never to be forgotten encounter with AC Napoli. Bangor won the home leg 2-0 but lost 1-3 in Italy. In those days there was no "away goals" rule so a replay was needed, staged at Arsenal's Highbury stadium. This time Napoli won 2-1 but City had carved a name for themselves that lives on to this day. In 1969 Bangor were founder members of the NPL, winning the League Cup in that first season. In 1979 the club were again founder members of the Alliance, now known as the Conference. In 1982 Bangor were NPL Champions and in 1984 reached the FA Trophy Final at Wembley, only to lose to Northwich Victoria in a replay at Stoke. The 1984 Trophy run took its toll on Bangor and in the same season cup glory was starkly contrasted to relegation - a return to the NPL. In 1992 Bangor were founder members of the LoW. In 1994 and 1995 won the LoW Championship under the management of Nigel Adkins. When the goalkeeper-manager left to become physiotherapist at Scunthorpe a difficult time ensued. Under the guidance of Graeme Sharp and John Hulse City were Welsh Cup winners in 1998 at The Wrexham Racecourse against Connahs Quay. Two years later in 2000 success against Cwmbran again at the Wrexham Racecourse under the management of Meirion Appleton, both wins resulting in European competition the following season. In May 2001 former Manchester United striker Peter Davenport replaced Appleton and set about rebuilding the club's fortunes. In 2002 and 2003 City finished in third place, qualifying for the UEFA Cup and Inter Toto respectively. After his departure there followed brief stints from Clayton Blackmore and Steve Bleasdale before the appointment of former favourite Nev Powell during the summer of 2007. In his first season City captured the Welsh Cup and secured European entry once more. Twelve months later Bangor repeated the feat with a 2-0 win over Aberystwyth at Parc Y Scarlets, and made it a hatrick of Welsh Cup wins a year later (2010) with a win over Port Talbot at the same venue. Powell then saw Bangor to a third WP championship after a gap of fifteen years as they pipped full timers TNS to the title in a nailbiting finish to the season against the Oswestry side at Farrar Road. A new era in the club's history began as Bangor City moved to a new stadium at Nantporth in January 2012 and finished the season as runners up. As the managerial list below shows Powell departed Nantporth in August 2016. Since that time several replacements have come and gone. Despite finishing in second place in 2018 the club was relegated to the Cymru Alliance having failed the WP licence. In May 2018 Craig Harrison was unveiled as the man charged with restoring the club to the national league. But he was soon gone and Gary Taylor Fletcher overcome injuries where possible to act as player manager until the end of the season. After an initial 42 point deduction by the FAW was halved on appeal the club went to arbitration and had all points reinstated and after a short delay City resumed the 2019-20 campaign in the newly branded JD Cymru North. |

Levi
Mackin |
Chester born Welshman Levi began his career
with Blacon Youth and Chester City but signed for Wrexham as a schoolboy and played
youth and reserve football for The Robins. He made his Football League debut as any 18 year old against Wycombe Wanderers in May 2004. This was the Denis Smith era, Denis Lawrence and Hector Sam played as did Simon Spender. The Wrexham goal in a one all draw was scored by Chris Llewellyn. Levi went on to make 45 Football League appearances for Wrexham and a further sixteen after their relegation to the Conference. He fell out of favour with manager Dean Saunders who did not appreciate Mackin's no nonesense combative style. Loan periods followed with Droylsden and York City with The Ministermen taking up the option of signing the Welsh U21 International on a permanent basis. After a total of 61 Conference starts for York Levi joined newly promoted Alfreton Town in July 2011 but after a relatively unhappy time in Derbyshire he signed for Chester in January 2012.
